What is Knowly?
+
Knowly is a homeschool learning platform that delivers one-to-one mastery instruction to children, K through 12. Knowly runs as a native desktop application — installed on your family's Windows or Mac computer — and teaches every child at their exact current level, requires them to actually do the work themselves, and brings every mastered concept back at expanding intervals until it is permanent. Three pillars: The Learning Edge, The Climb, and The Muscle.
How much does Knowly cost?
+
$109* per student per month for the platform. Families enrolling through a participating co-op receive 10% off. The curriculum your family uses is purchased separately, directly from the publisher of your choice. Knowly is the teacher. The curriculum is the curriculum. There is no free tier — every enrolled child gets the full Knowly experience.
When is Knowly launching?
+
August 2026. Starting in North Carolina and expanding state by state through 2026–2027. New families can enroll any month of the year — Knowly is not built around a September calendar.
What subjects does Knowly cover?
+
At launch: math, reading, writing, and science for grades K through 12. We are building the core subjects first and expanding based on what families tell us they need.
Can Knowly replace our existing curriculum?
+
Knowly is not a curriculum company. We deliver the curriculum your family already trusts — the major programs homeschool families have relied on for decades — one-to-one, with diagnostic grading and mastery gating. You choose the curriculum during setup and can change it if your child's needs change. Knowly is the teacher. The curriculum is the curriculum.
Do I need to be present while my child uses Knowly?
+
No. Knowly runs as a native desktop application — a notarized Mac app, a code-signed Windows app — installed directly on your family's computer. When it is open, the child sees the lesson and nothing else: no browser to escape to, no path to a chatbot, no other applications. You check the parent dashboard when it works for you, not in real time. The parent engagement loop gives you configurable check-ins and notifications when something needs attention.
How do you stop my child from using a chatbot to do the work?
+
Multiple integrity layers operate simultaneously. Knowly is a native desktop application with operating-system-level control — when it is open, no other browser or application is accessible. Keystroke biometrics learn your child's typing signature over their first weeks and flag any session where the pattern does not match. Time-on-task monitoring catches anomalously fast responses. Response pattern analysis flags reasoning that looks copied or generated. Handwritten work is required regularly — the child writes on paper, photographs it, and the platform reads the reasoning behind the answer, not just the result. There is no version of using Knowly that does not involve actually doing the work.
What does mastery-based mean in practice?
+
Your child never moves to the next concept until they have genuinely demonstrated mastery of the current one — across multiple formats, over time. Knowly holds the concept, presenting it differently, adding scaffolded practice, and spacing retrieval attempts until mastery is durable. Time is the variable. Understanding is the constant.
When can we start?
+
Any month of the year. Most learning programs assume your child starts in September — Knowly does not. The diagnostic places each new child at their actual current level on day one, regardless of grade label or time of year, and begins teaching from there. Pulling a child mid-year, moving states, or deciding in February that something has to change — all valid moments to start.
How is Knowly different from Khan Academy?
+
Khan Academy is a library of videos and practice problems. Knowly is a complete instructional system: it delivers explicit teaching, finds your child's exact learning edge in real time, requires them to do the work themselves with multiple integrity layers, brings every mastered concept back through spaced retrieval, and reports to you what was actually covered each day. Khan is a free resource. Knowly is a teacher.
How is Knowly different from a human tutor?
+
A human tutor costs $60–$150 per hour and is available for a few hours per week. Knowly delivers instruction every school day for $109* per month. The trade-off: a great human tutor brings relationship and intuition that software cannot fully replicate. The platform brings consistency, individualization at scale, and an evidence-based curriculum delivered the same way every single day — at a price families can actually afford.
Does Knowly use gamification?
+
No. No badges, points, leaderboards, or cartoon characters. Gamification makes children want to play the game. Knowly is designed to make children think — and thinking hard at the right level is genuinely satisfying.
What does the parent dashboard show?
+
A daily summary of what was covered. Mastery progress by subject with specific concepts — not vague percentages, but the exact concept your child is on. Alerts when something needs attention. Session statistics. Through the parent engagement loop, you get configurable conversation prompts and check-ins to help bridge concepts at home. Everything you need to stay informed without being present for every lesson.
Is my child's data safe?
+
Yes. We do not sell data, do not use student data for advertising, and do not participate in cross-site tracking. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. A comprehensive children's privacy policy covering COPPA compliance will be published before the platform launches, with detailed information on data handling for enrolled students.
Is there a free trial?
+
No free trial at launch. We are offering early access — joining the waitlist before August 2026 and getting priority when spots open. No payment required to join the waitlist.
* Effective monthly cost based on the standard 81 days off per year.
